Worthgate Students Shine at Model United Nations Conference

The Worthgate School students demonstrated exceptional diplomacy, critical thinking and teamwork at the Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School (QEGS) Model United Nations (MUN) Conference, earning multiple awards for their outstanding contributions to two days of international debate.

The conference brought together more than 200 students from seven schools to explore some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Representing the United Kingdom and South Africa, Worthgate’s two delegations embraced the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions, develop their diplomatic skills and experience the complexities of international decision-making.

Outstanding Preparation and Award-Winning Performances

Our students approached the conference with enthusiasm, confidence and a strong commitment to representing their allocated countries. Through extensive research and preparation, they developed a thorough understanding of their topics and national positions, enabling them to contribute thoughtfully and constructively throughout the event.

Their dedication was recognised with four Worthgate delegates receiving Highly Commended awards in their respective committees. The South African delegation also received a Highly Commended award for its overall participation, reflecting the group’s exceptional teamwork and diplomatic approach.

This recognition highlights the confidence, knowledge and communication skills demonstrated by our students throughout the conference.

Exploring Global Challenges Through Debate

Throughout the two-day event, delegates tackled a diverse range of complex international issues, from the opportunities and ethical considerations surrounding gene editing to the protection of undersea communication cables, decolonisation in Africa and nuclear proliferation.

Working within the formal procedures of the United Nations, students developed and debated resolutions, negotiated with other delegations and explored potential solutions to global challenges.

These discussions required more than subject knowledge. Delegates needed to listen carefully, consider different perspectives, communicate persuasively and collaborate with others, even when faced with competing national interests.

Our students demonstrated maturity, diplomacy and integrity throughout, earning praise from committee chairs for both their understanding of MUN procedures and their commitment to the principles of international cooperation.

Inspiring Insights into International Relations

A highlight of the conference was an engaging keynote presentation from the founders of Bankers without Boundaries, an organisation working with United Nations bodies to explore innovative funding solutions for international initiatives.

The presentation offered students a valuable insight into the financial challenges facing global organisations and the creative approaches being developed to support international goals.

It was particularly encouraging to see delegates applying ideas from the keynote speech to their committee discussions, demonstrating their ability to connect new knowledge with real-world challenges.
Developing Tomorrow’s Global Citizens

At The Worthgate School, we believe that education extends beyond academic achievement. Opportunities such as Model United Nations encourage students to develop the confidence, independence and global awareness needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

Participating in MUN allows students to strengthen essential skills in research, public speaking, negotiation and leadership, while gaining a deeper appreciation of different cultures, perspectives and international issues.
As an international school community, we value experiences that encourage students to think critically, embrace different viewpoints and approach complex challenges with curiosity, respect and an open mind.
