The Worthgate School is delighted to celebrate A Level student Kyal Sin (Jason), who has been shortlisted in the Public Policy category of the John Locke Institute Global Essay Prize 2026.
Originally from Myanmar, Kyal Sin (Jason) is studying A Level Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Further Mathematics, alongside an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). His shortlisting recognises his academic ability, enthusiasm for independent learning and willingness to explore ideas beyond the classroom.
This year’s competition attracted more than 100,000 entries from 183 countries, bringing together talented young thinkers from around the world. Following a rigorous assessment process, Kyal Sin (Jason)’s essay was selected as one of the highest-performing submissions making his achievement all the more impressive.
Exploring Complex Ideas Beyond the Curriculum
The John Locke Institute Global Essay Prize challenges students to engage with questions that extend beyond the traditional school curriculum. Entrants are encouraged to demonstrate independent thought, critical analysis, depth of knowledge and persuasive communication.
For his Public Policy essay, Kyal Sin (Jason) responded to the question: “What discount rate should be applied to long-run environmental policies, and why?”
The project gave him the opportunity to combine insights from biology, mathematics and economics. Through extensive independent research and analysis, Kyal Sin (Jason) drew connections between these disciplines to develop and test his argument.
This interdisciplinary approach reflects both his intellectual curiosity and his enthusiasm for applying knowledge in new contexts.
Reflecting on his achievement, Kyal Sin (Jason) said:
“Being shortlisted was a real encouragement. It was recognition for an argument about a topic I care deeply about, one that I wanted to test against serious economic and scientific literature.
What I enjoyed most was bringing biology and mathematics together to explore a problem in a completely different field: economics. I’m grateful for this opportunity to challenge and develop myself academically. My ambition is to continue broadening my horizons and learning across different disciplines.

Looking Ahead
Kyal Sin (Jason) plans to apply to universities in the UK and internationally and is particularly interested in studying Medicine. He is also exploring other academic pathways that reflect his enthusiasm for science and problem-solving.
His essay has been recognised among the strongest submissions in a highly competitive international field. The final results of the competition will be announced later this year.
