We are delighted to share the outcomes of our latest Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) inspection, which recognises the strength of our provision across academic, pastoral and boarding life, and identifies a Significant Strength in our support for students who speak English as an Additional Language (EAL).
The inspection highlights the school as a supportive, ambitious and inclusive learning environment where students are enabled to thrive both academically and personally.
Key Findings from the ISI Report
Inspectors identified a wide range of strengths across the school, including:
- Strong leadership and effective safeguarding supported by well-planned policies and procedures
- A flexible curriculum offering GCSEs, A Levels, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), University Foundation Programme and specialist academic English provision
- High-quality teaching that builds confidence, independence and engagement for all learners
- Well-structured PSHE and RSE programmes, with ongoing work to further strengthen consistency of delivery
- Strong boarding provision focused on student wellbeing, supported by effective induction processes and clear communication with students and families
- Robust safeguarding systems, governance oversight and safe recruitment practices
Significant Strength in Supporting EAL Learners
A key feature of the inspection was the recognition of the school’s provision for students who speak English as an Additional Language (EAL), which was identified as a Significant Strength.
Within the ISI framework, a Significant Strength is the highest level of commendation awarded. It is given only where provision goes substantially beyond expectations and serves as a model of excellence for other schools.
The report highlights that EAL students are exceptionally well supported through comprehensive baseline assessments in speaking, listening, reading and writing, which are shared with teaching staff to ensure targeted and effective support across all subjects.
Teachers consistently use effective strategies and tailored resources to support language development alongside subject-specific learning. This enables students to access the curriculum with confidence and build strong academic foundations.
Students preparing for university receive individualised support to achieve the level of English required for successful progression into higher education. In lessons, discussion and reasoning are used routinely to encourage students to read aloud, develop ideas and articulate their thinking with clarity.
As a result, students who speak EAL are described as self-confident, ambitious and highly motivated learners who actively engage in their studies, ask questions, challenge ideas and make strong progress from their starting points. The provision for EAL learners is recognised as a significant strength of the school.
