On Thursday 5th February, students and academic staff at The Worthgate School came together for our first Personal Development Day of the year. The day was designed to challenge, inspire and empower, with every student taking part in six engaging, age-appropriate workshops.
Closely aligned with our Worthgate Values, the UK RSHE curriculum and Fundamental British Values, each session offered meaningful opportunities for students to reflect, question and grow both personally and socially.
Understanding Consent with The Schools Consent Project
We were delighted to welcome presenters from The Schools Consent Project, both practising lawyers, who guided students through the complexities and “grey areas” of consent within a clear legal framework.
Through discussion and real-life scenarios, students developed a stronger understanding of their rights and responsibilities equipping them with the knowledge needed to navigate this important area with confidence and respect.
Student-Led Mental Health Symposium
One of the highlights of the day was our Mental Health Symposium, designed and delivered by our very own student Mental Health Champions.
Led by Psychology teacher Miss Saida, students rotated through three seminars exploring different aspects of mental health. The sessions encouraged open dialogue, reduced stigma and created a safe space for meaningful conversation. It was inspiring to see our students leading such an important initiative with maturity and empathy.
Staying Safe: Organised Crime and Scams
Police Constable Hughes delivered a powerful session highlighting the dangers posed by scams and exploitation linked to organised crime gangs an issue that affects communities worldwide.
With safety central to our ethos at The Worthgate School, students were able to ask questions and gain practical advice on how to recognise risks and protect themselves in an increasingly digital world.
“Everybody Matters” – Championing Equality
Ms Vicki, Ms Jemma and Ms Sue led thoughtful workshops titled Everybody Matters. These sessions encouraged students to actively recognise and practise seeing value in everyone, regardless of gender, age, beliefs or other protected characteristics.
Building on the work of their equality working party, the sessions reinforced our commitment to inclusion, respect and understanding within our diverse school community.
Financial Literacy for the Future
Mr Simon’s Financial Literacy workshop challenged students to think ahead. Through practical scenarios from living independently for the first time to planning a holiday or preparing for university students created budgets and faced real-world financial decisions.
Distinguishing between ‘wants’ and ‘needs’ proved particularly thought-provoking, equipping students with valuable life skills that will support their independence beyond school.
Misinformation, Disinformation and Democracy
Our Personal Tutors concluded the day with a session exploring misinformation and disinformation, and how these influence voting in modern politics. With a focus on UK democracy, students examined how information is shared and interpreted and the responsibilities that come with engaging in civic life.
Personal Development Day was a powerful reminder that education extends far beyond the classroom. By addressing topics that are relevant, challenging and real, we continue to support our students in becoming informed, responsible and compassionate global citizens.
