Getting to Know Mr Robin Cousins, Director of Higher Education

At The Worthgate School, higher education guidance is a personalised journey. Since July 2018, Mr Robin Cousins has led this journey, supporting students with expertise, care, and a commitment to helping them reach their potential.

With 25 years in education, including roles as Head of Sixth Form at Canterbury College and the Goodwin Academy, Mr Cousins brings extensive experience and a coaching approach shaped by his background in Sport Science and Physical Education.

“Spending my life devoted to sport and exercise has allowed me to develop leadership and coaching skills when working with young people,” he says. “I provide dedicated support to students in achieving their career ambitions.”

Guiding Students Towards Their Futures

“It is an immense challenge to become an international student,” Mr Cousins explains. “Guiding students to realise their potential and avoid common mistakes on the journey is very rewarding.”

At The Worthgate School, success isn’t just about university rankings. Students are guided to top-ranked universities that align with their interests and strengths, particularly institutions recognised for subject specialism.

“I am fortunate to guide every student individually to help them make the correct choices after their academic programmes,” he says.

From First Conversation to University Enrolment

The university application process at The Worthgate School is structured, detailed, and supportive:

  • Students explore subjects, build knowledge, and understand the skills needed for their chosen field.
  • Opportunities from Worthgate Futures, super-curricular activities, and independent exploration are fully utilised.
  • Students create long lists of UK and global universities and refine choices based on academic achievement and personal preference.
  • Applications are produced to the highest standards and triple-checked before submission.

“This is only the beginning,” says Mr Cousins. “My work continues with each student until I know they are 100% within their university choice.”

Supporting Competitive Applications

For Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, and Oxbridge, students join the University Scholars Programme from January of their first year. This provides knowledge building, admissions test preparation, interview coaching, and personalised application guidance.

High-achieving students receive accelerated support, combining super-curricular electives and intensive coaching to ensure applications meet the highest standards.

Opportunities, Mentorship, and Confidence

The Worthgate School surrounds students with opportunities to explore and develop. Annual university and careers fairs bring over 80 leading UK and global universities to campus, while careers professionals provide insight into key industries.

Students also have access to UNIFROG and the Worthgate Futures programme to enrich their skills and knowledge.

“Following the requirements that universities and careers demand requires planning, dedication, and time,” Mr Cousins explains. “If this is completed successfully, students have plan A, B, C, and D and understand how they can achieve their goals despite challenging moments along the journey.”

Worthgate’s Guidance Produces Measurable Results

The Worthgate School is proud that our students continue to achieve outstanding university destinations. In 2025, 21 students progressed to QS Top 100 universities worldwide, and 85% of graduating students received offers from Top 20, Russell Group, or QS World Top 100 institutions.

Destinations included Durham University, Imperial College London, University of Bath, University of Warwick, and University College London, currently ranked among the top 10 UK universities. Our students have pursued a diverse range of courses, including Criminology, Biomedical Engineering, BSc in Business, Computer Science, and Law with Hispanic Law.

You can explore more about our students’ achievements and destinations in the 2025 Destinations Flyer.

“These aren’t just statistics; they are living proof of the transformative power of personalised, compassionate guidance,” Mr Cousins reflects.

Finding the Right Fit

“What makes our students successful is that they find universities that fit their ambitions and spirit,” he says. “We guide them to understand that the ‘best’ university is the one that best fits them. This isn’t about prestige; it’s about purpose.”

At The Worthgate School, higher education guidance is a journey of self-discovery, growth, and academic excellence preparing students not just for university, but for life beyond it.
