Our Number One Students in Autumn 2023

Recognising and rewarding the hard work of our students is important at The Worthgate School. It is one of the ways we inspire and motivate our students to make striving for excellence part of their everyday lives.

When they arrive at The Worthgate School each of our students is sorted into one of our four houses: Leeds, Dover, Deal and Hever. These house names are inspired by the local castles around Canterbury. Every week all our students compete individually to earn the most Griffin Points. They also compete between their houses to earn the most House Points across the school.

Griffin points are part of an award system through which the hard work and kind deeds of our students are celebrated by our teachers, tutors and even our principal. Students earn them by displaying one of the 5 Worthgate Characteristics:

  • Caring
  • Communicator
  • Resilient
  • Open-Minded
  • Critical Thinker

House Points are also up for grabs and are earned when students contribute to their house’s reputation. They can do this by organising or participating in activities and getting involved with competitions.

11, 355 House Points were awarded over the Autumn Term. Competition is always fierce between our houses, and our league table is ever-changing, but at last count it looked like this:

House
Points
Deal
2258
Hever
2453
Dover
3136
Leeds
3508

Each week, the student who earned the most points lands the title of Number One Student and has their accomplishment recognised with a trophy, which they add their signature to before passing on the torch next week. In addition, number one students are invited to an afternoon tea with our Principal, Dr Ian Gross, so he can personally congratulate them on their accomplishment.

Our point systems inspires a healthy sense of competition amongst peers and is our way of applauding students for their positive contributions to the school and wider community, inside and outside of the classroom.
