One of the great benefits of being in Canterbury for us here at The Worthgate School is that when it comes to celebrating Christmas and the festive season, we get to do it in style.
On 12th December the School hosted a festive musical performance in the beautiful Canterbury Cathedral. Nearly 300 students attended the concert, which was conducted in a total of five languages.
Students took part in lighting the advent candles, performing the nativity tableau, and taking part in readings and messages of good will and peace across the world. The readings were conducted in English, Ukrainian, Turkish and Chinese.
Carols and songs included Once in Royal David’s City, Natal Todo Dia, a Portuguese song sung by our Brazilian students, The First Noel, O Holy Night, and a special performance of The Carol of the Bells in Ukrainian by our Ukrainian students.
Canterbury Cathedral is one of the most important cathedrals in the UK. Not only is it the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the home of the Anglican Christian denomination – it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The crypt, where the concert performed by The Worthgate School took place, is also the resting place for notable historical figures like Thomas Becket, and English royalty, such as Henry IV.
Live music for the service was also performed by our students, including piano played by Tra, and violin by Bao. The pair played the music for the arrival of the procession which included the Vice Dean of Canterbury Cathedral and our Principal Dr Ian Gross.
Dr Ian Gross offered words of thanks to the community, Canterbury Cathedral, and to the whole Worthgate family before the final procession and students heading off for their winter break.
